Welcome

2020 will see the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Royal Observatory in Cape Town, which was founded on 20 October 1820. In 1972 this institution was incorporated into the South African Astronomical Observatory whose headquarters it now is.

The Astronomical History Symposium 2018, hosted by the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town on 7 and 8 March 2018, serves as a precursor for the anniversary celebration. It aims not only to look back in time, but also to assess the role of astronomical history for today and the future, and to discuss ways of preserving the rich oral history in South Africa.

It is intended that this event should be very general and have speakers covering the major areas of astronomy in South Africa. Poster papers will also be welcome.

The LOC is looking forward to welcoming you in Cape Town!

Registration is now closed.

We thank the National Research Foundation for funding, and the South African Astronomical Observatory for the venue and logistical support.
